A one-year jail sentence plus P20,000 - P40,000 can be charged against singers who take liberties on singing the Philippine National Anthem according to the provisions of the National Flag Law. As the Pacquiao-Margarito fight nears, Zyrene Parsad who was chosen by Pacquiao to sing "Lupang Hinirang" for his upcoming fight in November, made sure that she will not be violating any of these provisions by asking pointers from the National Historical Institute (NHI).
Teddy Atienza, section chief of NHI's Heraldry, reminded the singer not to change the tune and tempo of the song and that she should not be nervous so she won’t forget her lines like what happened to singer Christian Bautista.
It can be recalled that Martin Nievera, Arnel Pineda, La Diva, Sarah Geronimo, Lani Misalucha, Charice Pempengco and a few more artists had been chastisied by NHI because of their wrong renditions.
NHI said that the Philippine National Anthem should last for 53 seconds if correctly sung with a two-fourths beat and 100 metronomes.
