Jake to play Joe Namath

Universal Pictures will turn the life of Joe Namath into a feature film, with Jake Gyllenhaal playing the Hall of Fame quarterback. The movie will tell the story of how the golden-armed kid became Broadway Joe, the New York Jets quarterback who became a 60s cultural figure. The handsome non-conformist became a sensation on the fields, in nightclubs and on Madison Avenue as the first star to become a magnet for commercials. "Most of the stuff you saw in Forest Gump, Joe lived through all of it," said the executive producer. He witnessed the struggle for civil rights in Alabama, the sexual revolution and Vietnam.

Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal spent a romantic few days in Napa Valley, California, last weekend. On November 10, Gyllenhaal and Witherspoon checked in to a private house with a rooftop jacuzzi at the exclusive Carneros Inn. Over the weekend, they relaxed and enjoyed each other's company, taking in a couple's massage, dinner, and a laid-back morning picnic. "They looked like they didn't have a care in the world," says a witness. "Reese looked like she was in heaven!"

Jake and Jessica to co-star?

Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Biel in talks to star in the risque political satire "Nailed." Biel would play Sammy Joyce, a socially awkward small-town receptionist who has a nail accidentally shot into her head by a clumsy workman, eliciting wild sexual urges. The uninsured Joyce goes on a crusade to Washington to fight for the rights of the bizarrely injured, where she meets an immoral congressman (Gyllenhaal) who takes advantage of her sex drive and capitalizes on her crusade. The flick is being co-written by Al Gore's daughter, Kristin Gore, and David O. Russell.

Jake Gyllenhaal and Reese Witherspoon had another PDA-packed public date Wednesday, taking Witherspoon's two children, Ava, 8, and Deacon, 4, trick or treating in LA's Brentwood neighborhood. Witherspoon was dressed as a witch; Gyllenhaal as an ape. "They were holding hands and swinging them in the air as they walked around the neighborhood," says a witness, who added that Gyllenhaal often lifted up his gorilla mask to smooch his Rendition co-star. "Reese was laughing at everything Jake was saying." As Ava (also in a witch costume) and Deacon (a superhero) ran up to every door for treats, "Reese and Jake waited on the sidewalk and flirted," the onlooker says. "Jake tapped Reese on the butt and then she hit him back - they began running in a circle hitting each other!" the witness reports. "Sometimes he came up from behind and nuzzled his big hairy mask into her neck."

The pair had been returning from Rome, where they were promoting their new film Rendition. On October 19, Witherspoon was spotted resting her head on Gyllenhaal's shoulder while walking through the streets as they enjoyed some downtime.

Natalie and Jake to co-star

Natalie Portman has signed on to star alongside Jake Gyllenhaal and Tobey Maguire in the love-triangle drama Brothers. Based on a 2004 Danish-language film, the story centers on a man (Maguire) who is sent to fight in Afghanistan while his black-sheep brother (Gyllenhaal) cares for his wife (Portman). David Benioff, husband of Amanda Peet, is penning the remake. Portman will appear in the upcoming films Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium, The Other Boleyn Girl, and My Blueberry Nights.

Jake's buddy arrested for DUI

Jake Gyllenhaal's buddy Austin Nichols was arrested early this morning in Jackson on suspicion of DUI and booked at the Jackson County Jail. Nichols, who appeared in the HBO series Deadwood and stars as John in John From Cincinnati, has been living in Clarke Lake for the summer. A Jackson police lieutenant said the actor was administered a breath test at the scene and hauled to jail. According to an HBO website, Nichols was born and raised in Austin, Texas, and moved to LA to study acting. He was once ranked third in the world in competitive water skiing, and won the Pan American championship in 1997.

Is Ryan upset about Jake?

Ryan Phillippe hasn't exactly offered a warm welcome to ex Reese Witherspoon's off-again, on-again guy, Jake Gyllenhaal, according to Us mag. "Ryan is pissed about Jake," a Phillippe insider says, adding that Phillippe told Witherspoon, "he didn't want 'that guy' around their kids and then made some crude Brokeback Mountain remark." However, a Gyllenhaal source told the mag that "Reese doesn't have Jake spend the night when the kids are around." Phillippe is rumored to be dating Aussie actress Abbie Cornish again. "They have been hanging out since June," says a source. The pair were spotted in LA's Franklin Canyon Park on August 5.

Jake Gyllenhaal is reportedly mulling a new role - on Broadway. The 26-year-old hottie is considering a part in the political stage drama Farragut North, due to open this fall. Gyllenhaal took part in a private reading of the play last week, which centers around an idealistic communications director making a run for office and is based on 2004 Democratic candidate Howard Dean. According to the New York Times, the play's author Beau Willimon is "a playwright [who] worked on Howard Dean's presidential campaign."

Jake Gyllenhaal may be trading in his cycling spandex for tights of a different kind - the Zodiac star is rumored to be favored to play superhero Captain Marvel in Shazam! Sources say the film's producers are eager to hand Gyllenhaal the part.

Monster co-stars Halle Berry and Billy Bob Thornton will reunite for the film Tulia, based on the novel Tulia: Race, Cocaine and Corruption in a Small Texas Town. Set to begin filming in New Orleans at the end of April, the plot follows a UCLA lawyer on a quest to expose a series of racially-motivated drug charges in Texas.

Colin Farrell and Charlize Theron will team up for the war flick The Hurt Locker. The film centers on a bomb disposal unit in the Iraqi war and will also star Ralph Fiennes and Willem Dafoe.

Jake Gyllenhaal demonstrated a bizarre fascination with white brief underwear on a recent trip to Bloomingdale's. An employee at the department store watched Gyllenhaal "combing through every style" of men's underwear with a salesperson. "A good ten minutes later, Jake was still at it," says the eyewitness. "Holding up a pair of tight white briefs that he'd pulled out of the package to examine, as if he'd never seen tighty whities before in his entire life. It was hilarious. He looked very confused and had a furrowed brow... He was examining undies like an anthropologist in the city's most highly trafficked department store."
